MBCO was just that next evolutionary step for the Klipbokkop Mountain Resort to start supplying the pub.
PG Groenewald (Our Master Brewer) did not like beer. He felt it was just something to drink before you drank something else on a hot day. Until he tasted Craft beer and realised there are a lot of flavours and then the light bulb went on and he understood what it was all about.
We started very small, just for the pub, and then we started winning a lot of accolades and everyone just wanted more. The decision was made that we were going to grow this business to a certain amount of volume and that would be it, as we wanted to maintain quality over quantity.
We started on a 50L professional system and we are now on a three-tier 600L system, which allows us sustainable growth. A big reason for this is the environment and the desire to not negatively impact our surroundings, as it is a nature conservation area. One of the ways we ensure this; is that not a drop of our water is wasted, and it is all recycled and reused. We have chosen a sustainable recycling model for South Africa by not using once off packaging in our products. Everything is recycled from the wooden crates to the cardboard boxes and the bottles themselves.

We source ingredients from right across the world, to ensure the best quality available. It’s easy to say you are a superior brand but to really stick to it is much harder. For example, the honey we source from the farm next to us is unfiltered and is rich in floral pollens which helps give the nose to the honey beers we produce.
For the Fynbos beer, we harvest just enough so that we don’t negatively impact our conservation area. We decided to make it a seasonal beer. Whatever we use we put back by replanting and keeping the Fynbos sustainable for our next generation.
Our spent grains, that are used in the brewing process, is given to sheep farmers in the community to help feed them. This helps create a symbiotic relationship and helps build a sense of community in our area.
Our Table Mountain sandstone water has a 400-year cycle, so if it rains today, then over 400 years that water will come out of the earth again. That is why it is so pure and crisp.
From a brewing process, the water is pure and untouched, so we don’t have to go and do a reverse osmosis cycle. The water brings unique characteristics to our beers and helps create the complexity that makes our beers unique.
Fynbos is one of the unique biomes in the world and a biodiversity hotspot. Over ten thousand species have been identified and they reckon that there are many more. In fact, on the entire planet, only 0.4% is covered with Fynbos. This guarantees that we get a unique profile which you can taste in our beers.

From there, he moved to Stellenbosch where he made a living by building wagons. The Groenewalds spread around the Western Cape and eventually after the First World War, ended up in Worcester.
